Groningen Traffic Nuisance: Truck Accident Causes Standstill on Southern Ring Road

Groningen is experiencing traffic nuisance for the second time this week on Wednesday morning. This time it was because a truck lost a load of dredged material on the Southern Ring Road.

Due to the accident, traffic on part of the Southern Ring Road came to a standstill for 45 minutes on Wednesday morning. After 45 minutes, the northern lane of the ring road between the Euvergunne junction and Julianaplein was closed. It is unknown how long the road will remain closed.

On the narrow temporary ring road, just past the Europaplein, the valve of a truck came loose and sludge poured onto the road. There is an almost unbearable pit smell in large parts of the city. The road surface must now be cleaned.

After the road was closed, traffic ‘trapped’ behind the truck was able to pass slowly.

Backwards

A large number of motorists who had just entered the ring road from Europaweg decided to reverse back. Large trucks, which took the old route to the city from Westerbroek but still threatened to get stuck in traffic, made a 180-degree turn on Europaplein to prevent them from ending up in the city centre. There it was extremely busy due to cut-through traffic on, among other things, the Sontweg (near the fire station) and the Trompsingel (De Oosterpoort).

During the closure, there is no proper detour route because the province started maintenance work on the eastern ring road this week and has closed part of that road.

This will also remain the case in the coming weeks, when the Southern Ring Road is closed in the same place as now – but in both directions – for the construction of the new ring road. Due to the activities of the province, traffic jams also arose on the northern and eastern ring roads on Monday.

According to Groningen Bereikbaar, there will be less chance of traffic misery from next week because of the holidays. According to the province, it was necessary to start now and the work could not be postponed. Due to very lengthy closures at Julianaplein next year, work may not be carried out on the rest of the ring road.
