The Party for the Animals and Student and City are the big winners of the municipal elections in the municipality of Groningen. GroenLinks loses two seats, but remains the largest party.

The Party for the Animals goes from three to four seats. Student en Stad is going from one to three seats. Newcomer Party of the North comes in with 4.1 percent of the vote. The party is thus heading for two seats.

GroenLinks loses, but remains the largest
GroenLinks, until tonight the largest with 21 percent of the votes, will go back to 17.8 percent. That means that of the eleven seats they had, they had to give up two and end up with nine seats.

The SP (from 5 to 4), VVD (from 4 to 3), ChristenUnie (from 3 to 2) also lose seats. PvdA, D66, CDA and PVV also lose votes, but it does not seem to result in a loss of seats for the parties. For CDA, that is the best possible scenario: the party feared a halving.

Fusion party is disappointing, no seat for Forum
Fusion party Stadspartij 100% Groningen also loses: of the joint percentage of 2018 (11.7 percent), the party now gets 9.2 percent of the votes. They will retain their four seats.

Newcomer Forum for Democracy gets 1.7 percent of the vote. That’s not enough for a seat. The same applies to newcomers Party for Economy, BVNL and Lijst Blanco Teunis Dokter.

The current coalition, consisting of GroenLinks, D66, PvdA and ChristenUnie, is one seat short of retaining a majority in the city council. A new coalition will therefore have to be formed.
