The Groningen fire brigade wants to move from its current location on Sontweg to the other side of the street, on the corner of Bornholmstraat. The training center is moving to a different location on the Winschoterdiep.

‘The current building on the Sontweg is finished,’ says Wilma Mansveld, director of the Groningen Security Region. ‘We call it a ‘squat’ ourselves. Maintenance is minimal, and we need an up-to-date barracks.’

About 50 million
The costs of the new barracks and the training center are estimated at between 49 and 55 million euros. The offices of the Security Region and the GGD will also be located in the barracks. ‘Every barracks has its price, but for this reason these buildings are slightly more expensive than those in the region.’

The Groningen municipalities are jointly paying for the new building, which will also house the Groningen Security Region. ‘The security region belongs to all of us. That is why we have 39 barracks spread across the province, which are as simple and efficient as possible.’

Barracks and training center separated
Separating the barracks and the training center has proven to be a necessary evil. ‘There is literally no single location for both purposes,’ says Mansveld. And we have to move, because housing is planned on the site of the current barracks on the Sontweg. ‘The training center will be on the Winschoterdiep. That’s close, so doable.’

Consideration has also been given to housing the training center at a different location in the province. In the end, however, this was not chosen. ‘Financially it doesn’t matter where we put it. In addition, the professionals there practice diving, for example. They are also responsible for the exit in the urban area in the event of a calamity. We therefore want to keep those two functions as close as possible to each other’, says Mansveld.

Several years
When the move will take place is not yet known, it will probably happen at the end of this decade. ‘I always say it’s for my retirement, and I really have to come along for a while’, Mansveld jokes. ‘I hope it will be possible within a few years. The most important thing is that we draw up a plan of requirements for the coming year. In this way we want to ensure that what will be shown is sober and effective, but also fit for the job is.
