GroenLinks seemed to be heading to vote against the city council’s plans to significantly expand the number of shared scooters in the city, but will ultimately not do so. The coalition party agrees to the extension, but does so under a number of conditions, including extending the trial.
At the moment there are 770 shared scooters driving around the entire city, but soon there will be 1200. GroenLinks councilor Elisabeth IJmker left earlier AT5 are not convinced. “The promise of the shared scooter is that it would replace the car, but what we see in Amsterdam is that it replaces the bicycle and public transport.”
It therefore seemed that the coalition party would vote against the plans of the city council, which would be quite unusual. IJmker now leaves on AT5 know that the party will eventually vote in favour. “It is no secret that GroenLinks is skeptical about the promises of the shared scooter, but I also understand that it is too early for some to stop now.”
Extension and larger service area
In addition, the trial will be extended for a maximum of two years and the service area, where the scooters may be parked, will also be enlarged. IJmker hopes that expanding that area will increase availability and use outside the ring, which is important for the party to call the test a success.
But in order to get an answer to that, the party understands that the expansion of the number of shared scooters is part of it. “In two years’ time, we will take a critical look at the evaluation and reassess what is being delivered on those promises.”
