GroenLinks has little faith in the new Minister for Housing, Hugo de Jonge. That is why the party is working on two bills to tackle the housing crisis. Jesse Klaver wants a self-occupancy obligation for all houses that are sold and a ceiling for rents. “If you really believe that we are in a housing crisis, then every house that is going to be sold now should go to someone who doesn’t have a house yet,” says Jesse Klaver. against NU.nl.
Since January 1, municipalities can oblige buyers of certain homes to live in their own house, but according to the GroenLinks leader, that does not go far enough. “It has become impossible for normal people – and I’m not talking about poor people or a very special group, but about everyone who does not yet own a house – to buy a house,” says Klaver.
With his proposal, the party leader of GroenLinks wants to prevent houses from being bought up by investors and other slum landlords. “This is how we stop buying homes as a revenue model,” he writes on Twitter. In addition, the mid-rent recovery law must ensure that tenants no longer have to spend a huge part of their income on housing.
Pawnbrokers and investors make millions in profits. We are in a huge housing crisis. If we don’t change the system, new homes will simply be bought by investors. Our private member’s laws are tackling this system! 2/5

With the recovery law mid-rent, we arrange that houses in the free sector also receive a maximum rent. As a result, rents will fall sharply. So that – if you want to rent – you pay a normal price for your house. 4/5

Hugo de Jonge does not seem to intend to support Klaver’s proposal: according to the CDA minister, investing in houses must remain attractive, NU.nl reports.
