Groen chairman Meyrem Almaci: “Extension of two nuclear power plants is part of the coalition agreement, so that is possible”

Almaci notes that extending the nuclear power plants is an option on the table that will cost a lot of money. “It costs 1 billion euros to extend your nuclear power plants. But let’s go to the auction first.”

Engie Electrabel, the company that operates the Belgian nuclear power plants, already announced at the end of last year that it is preparing the nuclear phase-out in 2025 and that the lifetime extension investments would be scrapped.

About the arrival of new gas-fired power stations, which emit a lot of CO₂ and nitrogen and are therefore bad for the climate, Meyrem Almaci said on Radio 1 that those power stations will only be active during a short transition period. “The great merit of the coalition agreement is that the debate about the closure of nuclear power plants has stopped after 17 years.”
