Groceries have become more expensive compared to a year ago. According to market researcher GfK, people pay an average of three to four percent more, with peaks of 9 percent.
Researchers compared the prices of products in supermarkets, bakers, butchers and other specialty stores. They kept receipts from the first quarter of this year in addition to those from the first quarter of 2020.
Meat, salads and bread in particular rose in price. Beer, animal food and a bunch of flowers also became more expensive. Some of these products are popping up with price increases of an average of 9 percent.
More pets
According to the GfK, the increase is not only caused by inflation, which amounted to 1.9 percent. The pandemic is also one of the causes, GfK’s Norman Buysse said in it NOS Radio 1 News.
The price is being pushed up because of more people during the pandemic took a pet and at the same time there is a great demand for more luxurious pet food.
Not everything became more expensive. For example, the price for sweets and biscuits remained about the same. Many care products even became cheaper.
The cause of this, according to Buysse, is once again the pandemic. Because people work from home more often and go outside less, they spend less on personal care items. “Think of toothpaste, deodorant or shampoo,” says Buysse. There is less demand and then the price goes down.
