The authorities have informed all the approximately 4,000 inhabitants that they must leave the city by Monday evening.
After 19:00 local time on Monday, it will be forbidden to stay in the city. The ban applies for three weeks, the police say.
The broadcaster RUV reports that there is a greater risk of cracks and unexpected crack openings in Grindavik than previously. Residents are advised not to stay in the city for the next few days, although the deadline to evacuate is set for Monday evening.
On 10 November, all the inhabitants of the small town on the Reykjaneshalvøya in the west of Iceland were evacuated after a series of earthquakes that left large cracks and openings in the earth’s crust.
The earthquakes were a warning of an impending volcanic eruption, and it occurred on December 18. However, the lava from the volcanic eruption did not reach Grindavik.
