Grimes Offers Her Voice for AI-Generated Music: A New Wave of Creative Expression?

On different occasions, Grimes has shown his interest in artificial intelligence. Recently, this tool has taken over the internet despite being a system that has been developed in recent years. With this in mind, the Canadian interpreter has joined the current debate on artificial intelligence, and inviting her followers to use her voice to create new music.

Expressing his enthusiasm for “merging [con] a machine”, the proposal arises from an article shared by the singer, which highlighted a viral hit song called «’Heart On My Sleeve’ that used AI to generate voices inspired by popular artists Drake and The Weeknd . The song garnered millions of views on TikTok and YouTube within hours of being posted, but was later taken down by Universal Music Group, who accused the post of violating copyright laws and denying artists compensation. .

“I will split 50% of the royalties on any AI-generated song that uses my voice. Same treatment as any artist I collaborate with,” Grimes wrote in a tweet. “Feel free to use my voice without penalty. I have no record company, no legal obligations”.

She continued: “I think it’s great to be fused with a machine and I like the idea of opening up all the art and breaking copyright… We’re making a program that should simulate my voice well, but we could also upload stems and samples for that people can train theirs”.

The ‘Genesis’ interpreter sees AI as an innovative tool that can be harnessed for creative expression. She is not the only artist who has shown her support for the music generated with this tool. Recently, former Oasis member Liam Gallagher praised a group that used AI to create a “lost” album by the Britpop band, calling it “incredibly crazy” and appreciating the unique vocals he produced. However, not all artists share the same sentiment, with Nick Cave expressing his disdain for AI in music creation, noting that he considers it a “grotesque mockery of what it means to be human.”

In addition to his defense of the tool in music, Grimes will deliver a closing address on AI and music technology at the International Music Summit (IMS) in Ibiza later this month. Co-hosted by Pete Tong and Jaguar, the three-day conference will serve as a platform for Grimes to share his insights and perspectives on the intersection of music and AI in the ever-evolving landscape of the metaverse.
