Griezmann announces sudden retirement from football

Antoine Griezmann, one of the most emblematic players of the French national team during the last decade, surprised the football world today by announcing the end of his international career with Les Bleus.

The 33-year-old forward, affectionately called “Grizou” or “Little Prince” by his fans, had 137 caps for the national team and scored 44 goals over 10 years. Its highlight was the consecration in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Griezmann’s decision was unexpected, since the Atlético de Madrid star had only said a few months ago that he intended to play in the 2026 World Cup.

His departure, combined with those of fellow world champions Olivier Giroud, Blaise Matuidi, Raphael Varane and Hugo Lloris, marks the end of an era for France.

“With a heart full of memories I close this chapter of my life,” Griezmann expressed in a message published on Instagram. “Thank you for this magnificent tricolor adventure and see you soon.”

Griezmann — Atlético’s all-time top scorer — made his debut for France in 2014 in a friendly match against the Netherlands and soon established himself as a stronghold of the team led by Didier Deschamps due to his versatility and impact both as a scorer and an assister.

Only two players, Lloris and Lilian Thuram, have played more games for the French team than Griezmann.

He is fourth in the all-time scoring table, behind Giroud, Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappé.

“One of the most important players in the modern era of our national team,” Mbappé said of Griezman. “Some will think it is very premature to stop, but I understand and respect your decision. Wearing this shirt always demands more, sometimes without receiving recognition.”

He was also key to France finishing runners-up in the 2016 Euro Cup, in which he was proclaimed the best player of the tournament.

He scored from a penalty in the 2018 World Cup final, in which France defeated Croatia 4-2 and won the Nations League three years later.

“After 10 incredible years, marked by challenges, successes and unforgettable moments, it is time to turn the page and make way for the new generation,” said Griezmann.

“Wearing this jersey was an honor and a privilege. From March 2014 until last September, I had the opportunity to live incredible moments with exceptional teammates. We shared victories that will forever be etched in our memories.”

Deschamps highlighted that The Little Prince was a striker without selfishness, “something very rare among attacking players.”

Griezmann did not mention how much longer he will continue his career at club level. His contract with Atlético ends in 2026.

“Even though his club career is not over, Antoine was and will remain a monument of French football,” Deschamps said.
