‘Grieving’ swan causes chaos on the German railways

Ultimately, police and firefighters had to be involved to get the swan off the track. According to the local police 23 trains were held up for at least 50 minutes. That was how long it took for the swan to be removed.

Catenary

First, firefighters in special equipment had to get the swan’s dead partner out of the overhead wires. Then the ‘mourning’ bird itself was taken off the track. The animal was released at a nearby river.

Swans are known as monogamous animals and may mourn the death of their partner for some time. For example, the black swan Koosje became known five years ago after his partner Keesje died. The bird stared at its own reflection in a garbage can for weeks, thinking it recognized its partner in the reflection.
