The death of Sven Goran Eriksson spread emotion in world football. The Swedish coach had been suffering from pancreatic cancer since last January and breathed his last this morning at the age of 76.
Eriksson had shocked public opinion with the farewell video he posted a few days ago. Then he said the following:
“I had a good life, yes. I think we all fear the day when life ends, when we die. But life is also about death. You have to learn to accept him for who he is.
Hopefully, in the end, people will say, “Yes, he was a good man,” but not everyone will say that. I hope you will remember me as a positive guy, who tried to do his best. Don’t be sorry. Smile.
Thank you for everything, coaches, players, the public. It was all fantastic. Take care of yourself, take care of your life and live it. Goodbye!”.
Eriksson won 18 trophies with clubs in Italy, Sweden and Portugal, including the 1982 UEFA Cup with Gothenburg and the 1999 Cup Winners’ Cup with Lazio. He also worked for the national teams of England, Mexico, the Philippines and Ivory Coast. The last 5 years of his career (2012-8) he worked in China, while earlier he also went through Manchester City.
