Greta Thunberg has reached her destination. In New York she was received first by UN sailboats and then by several hundred passers-by.
Greta Thunberg spent two weeks on the high seas – now she has made it. The climate activist has reached New York City on board the sailing ship “Malizia II”.
On August 28 at 4:06 p.m. New York time (10:06 p.m. in Germany), Greta disembarked at the North Cove Marina, a marina in southwest Manhattan. She carried her sign with the inscription “School strike for the climate” (“Skolstrejk för klimatet”). Several hundred people were waiting for the climate activist to arrive at the port.
At a spontaneous press conference, Greta told about her trip. This went “surprisingly well”. “I never felt seasick,” emphasizes the 16-year-old. She seemed a little taken by surprise by the reception in New York. “All of this is very overwhelming. The ground is still shaking. “
After her arrival, Greta wants to rest first. She wrote on Twitter: “Thanks to everyone who saw me off in Plymouth and welcomed me to New York. I will now rest for a few days and take part in the strike in front of the UN on Friday. “
United Nations welcomed Greta
The United Nations had organized a special reception for Greta while still on the water. They welcomed the young climate activists with 17 sailing boats off Manhattan. “Each of them stands for one of the UN sustainability goals and is provided with a corresponding symbol on the sail,” says a message from United Nations Regional Information Center.
Stopover at Coney Island
At around 9:20 a.m. (3:20 p.m. German time), the Malizia II had already reached Coney Island. This borough of Brooklyn is located in Lower Bay, a bay on the east coast of New York. In a post on Twitter, Greta wrote that she and her team had to take care of customs and immigration formalities there.
“The lights of New York City are ahead of us”
The New York coast had been visible the night before. At around 10 a.m. German time, Greta posted a photo of a dark landscape on Instagram. A few lights could be seen on the horizon. She wrote: “Country !!! The lights of Long Island and New York City are ahead of us. “
Over the past few weeks, Greta seemed to have gotten used to life on the high seas. In a post that the 16-year-old published on Twitter on Tuesday evening, she wrote: “Home sweet home for 14 days. Soon last evening on board the “Malizia 2”. Tomorrow we will reach New York. “
Greta kept her followers up to date throughout the trip. On the same day, she had already published a photo that shows her on the ship. „119 miles to Manhattan, ”she wrote. The ship sailed south of Long Island in a light wind.

Journey to the UN climate summit
Greta’s crossing of the Atlantic took 15 days. The 16-year-old traveled by sailing boat because she did not want to damage the climate with a flight. The reason for her trip to New York: She wants to attend the UN climate summit in September.
