Greta Thunberg arrives in New York

After a good two weeks at sea, the Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg will most likely arrive in New York today. The team on the racing yacht “Malizia” recently expected an arrival in the afternoon, New York time – in Austria that would be between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Under certain circumstances, however, the arrival time could be delayed by a few hours due to poor wind forecasts.

The United Nations want to greet Thunberg with 17 sailing boats upon arrival. Each of them stands for one of the UN sustainability goals and is provided with a corresponding symbol on the sail, as the United Nations announced. Accordingly, the boats would wait for the racing yacht “Malizia II” with Thunberg on board in front of Manhattan near the Verrazano Bridge. This spans the strait between Staten Island and Brooklyn.

The 16-year-old Swede made her way across the Atlantic on August 14th in Plymouth, southern England, because she wants to take part in the UN climate summit in New York in September and the world climate conference in Chile in December. Several major protests and meetings with other activists, decision-makers and those affected by climate change are also planned.
