Greta Gerwig’s pink sci-fi comedy topped $1 billion worldwide, including $459 million in North America and $572 million internationally. Thus, Gerwig became the first female director with a billionaire film.
Three other billion-dollar blockbusters were directed by women: Frozen ($1.3 billion) and Frozen 2 ($1.45 billion), directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, and Captain Marvel ($1.1 billion), directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.
The Barbie movie crosses the milestone just 17 days after release, becoming Warner Bros.’s fastest release yet. (and eighth in the studio’s 100-year history) to enter the $1 billion club. Previously, this record was held by the film “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2”, which had previously held 19 days.
Barbie became the second blockbuster this year and the sixth pandemic-era film to gross $1 billion, after Spider-Man: No Way Home, Top Gun: Maverick, Jurassic World: Domination, and Avatar : The path of water.
The critically acclaimed Barbie Movie opened on July 21 and exceeded expectations, grossing $155 million domestically, making it the biggest debut of 2023. The film became a full-fledged phenomenon thanks to the marketing campaign of the year and excellent reviews.
