For the first time in 28 years, Belarus has introduced partial border controls towards Russia, the Belarusian foreign minister says.
The two countries, which are considered close allies, share a 1,239 kilometer long border.
According to Belarus’ Foreign Minister Sergej Alejnik, border controls have been reintroduced to prevent people from third countries from entering the country illegally.
However, human rights activists believe that the measure is aimed at Russian men who go to Belarus to avoid mobilization and then be sent to the front in Ukraine.
According to Alejnik, the checks are to be carried out in close cooperation with Russian border guards.
