Since 2015, the City of Grenoble and Grenoble Lumière have deployed a revolution in their approach to urban lighting. At the end of the Energy Performance Contract, the results speak for themselves, with notable gains in modernization, energy savings, and environmental commitment.
A promising result after 8 years of collaboration
In September 2015, the City of Grenoble and Grenoble Lumière sealed an energy partnership through an Energy Performance Contract for Design, Construction, Operation and Maintenance (CREM). After a successful period of eight years, the contract is coming to an end, giving way to a positive balance sheet and optimistic future prospects.
Since 2015, sobriety and energy performance
The CREM mainly aimed to renew the public lighting fleet and reduce energy consumption. The results exceed the initial objectives, with rapid modernization, faultless quality of service, and adaptation to environmental challenges, characterized by lowering the brightness to the correct level. The lighting plan adopted in 2015 made it possible to achieve significant savings, including the renewal of 84% of the lighting fleet, an energy saving of 54%, and a reduction in light pollution of 60%.
Management under management was a success, allowing the establishment of a committed operating council, which played a crucial role throughout this market transforming the bright spots and in particular during the energy crisis of 2022. Measures bold steps have been taken, such as turning off the lighting in parks, lowering the brightness at several points, and implementing 3 levels of dimming for LED lighting.
Towards a sustainable nighttime identity
Building on these successes, the City of Grenoble is preparing for a new phase by strengthening its urban lighting and electrical networks division. The results of the tender for the works will soon be made public. Future prospects include the complete renovation of the park to achieve 100% LED lighting and the strengthening of internal skills.
Grenoble is committed to going further on environmental and biodiversity issues, while integrating security requirements in urban areas. The adaptation of public lighting to uses, the fight against light pollution, energy efficiency and the development of a distinctive nocturnal identity will be at the heart of the next steps for Grenoble Lumière. The future looks bright for the City, faithful to its commitment to resilient energy combining quality of life and sobriety.
