Gregor Seberg celebrates comeback as Helmuth Nowak

After seven years, the actor is returning to the successful ZDF series. But for “SOKO Wien” fans, a farewell is also imminent.

Next year, the crime series “SOKO Wien” will celebrate a big anniversary. The investigation has been taking place in Austria since 2005, and filming for the 20th season is currently underway. And in this season, viewers will be able to see something new: cult detective Helmuth Nowak, played by Gregor Seberg, is making his comeback. ORF, which produces the series together with ZDF, announced this on Monday.

In 2017, the actor turned his back on “SOKO” after eleven years, “because I had the feeling that I already knew every room in the house. Now it has been expanded. There is a new room for me to discover,” Seberg is quoted as saying in the station’s press release. He is back on the team in the new episodes, which are expected to be shown on TV from autumn 2025.

And not only that: Helmuth Nowak was promoted to head of the special unit. However, this also means saying goodbye to the fans of the series. Because the current head, Colonel Henriette Wolf, will be retiring during the 20th season. Actress Brigitte Kren has been seen in the series since 2018.

“Since I always rely on my inner feelings, I knew that this decision was the right one. As wonderful as my time as Colonel Dr. Wolf was, I now want to devote myself to other tasks – of course only after I have allowed myself a little time off,” said the actress about her departure.

In addition to Gregor Seberg and Brigitte Kren, the proven Viennese team of Andreas Kiendl, Martin Gruber, Maria Happel, Lilian Klebow and Max Fischnaller will be in front of the camera. Before the 20th season continues in the autumn of 2025 at the usual time slot on Fridays at 6 p.m., a primetime special of “SOKO Vienna” will be broadcast on ZDF next Wednesday, September 25, from 8:15 p.m.
