Gregg Wallace Hits Back at ‘Middle-Class Women’ Over Cooking Show Criticism

Masterchef Star Gregg Wallace Steps Back Amidst Sexual Misconduct Allegations

The beloved host of MasterChef, Gregg Wallace, is facing serious accusations of inappropriate sexual behavior, prompting him to step down from the popular cooking show temporarily. The allegations, outlined in a letter purportedly sent to the BBC in 2022 by producer and director Dawn Elrick, paint a disturbing picture of Wallace’s alleged conduct towards female staff and contestants.

"We do not need to stress how difficult/stressful/upsetting it is for women in production to be placed in a position where high-profile talent use their clout to make deeply uncomfortable remarks," Elrick’s letter states.

The letter details a pattern of alleged misconduct, including lewd comments, requests for personal phone numbers, and requests for conversations while Wallace was topless, leaving many women feeling “uncomfortable” in his presence. These claims have been corroborated by anonymous accounts compiled by Elrick’s "Shit Men In TV Have Said To Me" project, which collects firsthand accounts of sexism and harassment within the television industry.

Elrick, who claims to have received these allegations via her Instagram account, asserts that the letter was submitted with the support of the industry union Bectu. She stated that she subsequently submitted the allegations to the BBC through Navex Global, an external whistleblowing service, but claims that she received no contact from the BBC regarding the matter.

According to the letter, these alleged actions against female staff and contestants spanned a 17-year period, prompting a review by MasterChef producer Banijay UK. The company has appointed the law firm Lewis Silkin to lead an externally conducted and impartial investigation.

Wallace, who has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, claims that the accusations stem from "middle-class women of a certain age" and that he believes the allegations are unfounded.

"I’ve been doing MasterChef for 20 years, amateur, celebrity and professional MasterChef, and I think, in that time, I have worked with over 4,000 contestants of all different ages, all different backgrounds, all walks of life," Wallace stated in a video posted on Instagram.

“Apparently now, I’m reading in the paper, there’s been 13 complaints in that time… In 20 years, over 20 years of television, can you imagine how many women, female contestants on MasterChef, have made sexual remarks, or sexual innuendo? Can you imagine?”

Despite his denial, Wallace has agreed to step down from MasterChef while the investigation takes place. Channel 5 is also investigating allegations of misconduct against Wallace that have surfaced on its production, Gregg Wallace’s Big Weekends.

Banijay UK Emphasized its commitment to a safe working environment: "Our comprehensive duty of care processes were in place during production of these series and any matters raised would have been investigated in accordance with these."

With the scandal expanding and the investigation underway, the future of Gregg Wallace in the culinary world remains uncertain.
