Greens promote secure education in the crisis: November 17, 2020, 10:21 a.m.

After yesterday’s non-decision by the MPK, the question arises of how things will continue in view of the ongoing pandemic, especially in terms of education. Astrid Rothe-Beinlich, Green parliamentary group leader in the Thuringian state parliament and spokeswoman for children, youth and education policy …? Children have rights – even in times of pandemics. The promise of equal opportunities is massively called into question by insufficient educational offers – with drastic consequences. Children suffer from a lack of social contact – on top of that there is increasing social injustice. It is therefore right that everything should be done to secure access to early childhood education, good teaching and school. However, the kindergartens and schools need concrete support for this. Ventilation and blankets alone are not enough to get through the crisis safely. We finally need flexible and pandemic-friendly solutions. For us alliance greens, four things now have priority: a broad digital offensive, a safe route to school, supporting assistants in the facilities and air filters in school classes and kindergartens.

The fact is: the safer learning can be made, the longer kindergartens and schools can stay open. And the younger the children are, the more important face-to-face learning is. That is why an immediate federal program is now needed to procure mobile air filters and extensive tests to evaluate their effectiveness.

?? However, safety begins on the way to school. School traffic must also be organized in such a way that contacts can be reduced ?, the Green politician points out. Many travel companies currently have no orders. They could be called in to assist with student transportation. “Staggered starting times in school could also provide relief,” emphasizes Rothe-Beinlich and adds: “In addition, there is an urgent need for concepts for learning in quarantine. Quarantine lessons must be didactically and technically prepared. A transnational approach is absolutely essential here.

The fact that so few schools are securely connected to the broadband network and have WiFi in the classrooms is absolutely unsatisfactory for the education politician. ?? Only with a decent internet connection is digital teaching actually possible. It must finally be ensured that in the event of a quarantine, all children can learn at home using digital devices and functioning learning platforms. Families in particular who cannot afford this as a matter of course need fast, unbureaucratic support. This now requires reallocations from the digital pact ??, Rothe-Beinlich is finally convinced.
