The word “candidate for chancellor” does not appear in the application; instead, Habeck is described as a “candidate for the people of Germany.” At the same time, he should form a “top duo” with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock until the early federal elections at the end of February.
Around a week and a half after the traffic lights went out, the Greens launched the election campaign at the party conference. In addition to Habeck’s nomination, the focus was on the election of a new party leadership and the substantive positioning. The new party leaders are the parliamentary state secretary in Habeck’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, Franziska Brantner, and the Bundestag member Felix Banaszak. They replaced Ricarda Lang and Omid Nouripour.
