It was foreseeable that Gerhard Andrey would fail – but party representatives still showed emotions.
A few dozen party members gathered at the Progr cultural center in Bern to follow the Federal Council election.
They didn’t travel to Bern with too high expectations when it came to their candidate Gerhard Andrey. Nevertheless, there is no mood for celebration following the re-election of FDP Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis.
More green initiatives and referendums?
In particular, many members of the Young Greens from all over Switzerland have come together here in the program. Do you have a particularly strong urge for change? “Yes – because ultimately it’s about the future,” says Magdalena Erni, co-president of the Young Greens Switzerland.
We have to put pressure on this Federal Council.
After missing the Federal Council election, the Greens would have to become even more of an opposition party. “We have to take initiatives and referendums and put pressure on this Federal Council,” demands Erni. It has become clear that the Federal Council election is exclusively about maintaining power.

Gerhard Andrey’s campaign manager, Julien Vuilleumier, does not want to speak of a “disappointment”. “We knew from the start that it would be a challenge,” says the Grand Councilor from the canton of Friborg. “But it’s kind of a bitter feeling.”
No support from the SP
The mood is currently a bit bitter with regard to the Greens’ relationship with the SP. Vuilleumier admits that he is disappointed that “his” candidate Andrey did not receive more votes from the sister party.
The Left is now a weak minority in the Federal Council – so nothing will ever change.
“The risk actually wouldn’t have been that big for the SP,” he is convinced. The SP missed an opportunity to take responsibility. “It is a sign that the Left is now a weak minority in the Federal Council. Nothing will ever change like that,” Vuilleumier continues.
The Greens may not be feeling great disappointment on the day of the Federal Council election – but there is certainly a certain amount of bitterness.
