GreenPower wants to build electric school buses in West Virginia

GreenPower Motor, a North American electric utility vehicle manufacturer, has acquired a manufacturing facility in South Charleston, West Virginia. GreenPower wants to produce electric school buses there from the second half of 2022.

As part of the agreement, the state of West Virginia has committed to purchase at least $15 million worth of electric school buses produced at the plant. On the almost 38,000 square meter site there is already a 7,400 square meter building in which production is to be set up.

According to the announcement, the deal is a combined lease/purchase agreement. Monthly payments will begin nine months after the start of production, which is expected to be in the course of 2023. Once lease payments reach $6.7 million, ownership of the properties will transfer to GreenPower.

GreenPower, whose headquarters are in Vancouver, Canada, intends to serve the US states east of the Mississippi with the plant in West Virginia. So far, the company has been manufacturing its US vehicles in Porterville, California. In addition to the e-school bus, GreenPower offers three other e-buses and a total of six variants of an electric Class 4 commercial vehicle – from a chassis to a panel van to a minibus.
