Greenpeace warns of ecological disaster at sea off Kamchatka Peninsula / Day

The organization reports that the water in the sea off the Kamchatka Peninsula has changed color and started to stink, but hundreds of dead marine inhabitants, including seals, octopuses and sea urchins, have been washed ashore.

Water tests in bays and beaches have revealed elevated levels of phenol and oil products, according to regional authorities.

Experts are investigating whether it is related to the release of toxic substances, said the governor of Kamchatka region Vladimir Solodov.

He added that inspectors on Tuesday would inspect two military test sites in Kamchatka that could be responsible for the pollution.

The water pollution came to light at the end of last month, when local surfers reported that the water had changed color, started to stink and bite into the eyes. Solodov said that surfers have suffered light corneal burns.

He added that divers had confirmed the deaths of the marine life and that the pollution appeared to have spread over a wider area. However, water tests in the river that flows into the bay have not shown any increased pollution.

Greenpeace reports that it has contacted the state environmental services, the armed forces and the Prosecutor General’s Office requesting the immediate opening of an investigation. Prosecutors and investigators have said they will investigate the crime, but have not provided more information.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations reports that it uses boats and unmanned aerial vehicles to monitor the situation on the coast, but points out that the pollution is not visible.

At the same time, the authorities have urged tourists not to visit the volcano in Kamchatka, because of an eruption.
