Greenpeace mobilizes to protect the seabed in Poitiers.

Several activists of the organization Greenpeace were present on the Notre-Dame market this Saturday March 18, 2023 in Poitiers to raise awareness among the general public and have a petition signed to say “no to seabed mining”.

On the stand of the local group Greenpeace Poitiers, leaflets are distributed and parents and children are invited to sign and draw their vision of the oceans.

“No need to destroy ecosystems”

Chantal Vergnes, one of the leaders of the Poitevin group, summarizes the situation as follows: “We are at a turning point regarding seabed mining. The AIFM, the International Seabed Authority must meet from March 20, 2023 to decide whether or not to authorize the start of ocean mining.

If it saw the light of day, this industry would consist of sending gigantic machines to scrape the seabed at 4,000 or even 6,000 meters deep. However, we know that the deep seabed will not provide the metals necessary for the energy transition”.

To date, the Greenpeace petition has already collected more than 170,000 signatures.
