The first TV broadcast of the 2024 presidential electionpolitical opinion presentationIt will be held tonight. Greenpeace has chosen to raid and occupy the gates of the campaign headquarters of the three presidential candidates today, blocking the entrances and exits with giant campaign posters. In addition to expressing the 2030 aspirations of each candidate, renewable energyThe target is difficult to solve the problem of “lack of green electricity” among enterprises, and it also requires candidates to increase their renewable energy target to more than 40% of energy by 2030.
Nearly 40 Greenpeace volunteers showed up at the entrance of the campaign headquarters of major presidential candidates at around 6 a.m. this morning, assembling large campaign billboards about 3 meters high to block the main entrance and express their views on renewable energy. Express dissatisfaction and expect candidates to respond to their demands during political speeches.
Greenpeace said, “Renewable energy is not only an environmental issue, but also an economic issue. Nearly 70% of Taiwan’s GDP relies on exports. Under the requirements of carbon reduction in the global supply chain, Taiwanese companies are facing the dilemma of “losing orders without green electricity.” The political views of the candidates in 2024 are crucial to the future of Taiwan’s economy. If the supply of renewable energy still cannot keep up with the rapidly growing demand, it will make the dilemma of enterprises “short of green electricity” even worse.
Greenpeace pointed out that at the beginning of the election, each candidate proposed a goal of 27% to 30% renewable energy in 2030. Greenpeace has repeatedly stated that this goal is insufficient to meet future industrial needs; and at the end of November, nine major industrial and commercial groups At the “2023 Taiwan Economic Development Forum” held, some business representatives directly expressed to the three presidential candidates that the high price of green electricity affects the competitiveness of enterprises and is a problem that the future government needs to solve. However, the candidates have not yet responded. Regarding the proportion of green electricity, there is no response on how to reduce the price of green electricity.
What is even more worrying is that the Ministry of Economic Affairs estimates that corporate demand for green electricity will grow to 31.8 billion kilowatt-hours in 2030. This demand is 33 times the amount of green electricity purchased by companies in the market last year. Greenpeace said that when green electricity demand increases by 33 times, but currently renewable energy has only grown about three times, and demand is growing much faster than supply. If the candidates do not review their 2030 renewable energy goals, they will be leaving companies to fend for themselves.
Greenpeace believes that while the European Union, the United States, India and other governments have raised their 2030 renewable energy targets to more than 40% and invested more funds and policies to promote the development of green electricity, the three presidential candidates have continued the original ruling party’s policies last year. The proposed renewable energy target is even lower, completely showing no determination of the candidates to solve the “lack of green electricity” crisis in enterprises. Greenpeace calls on all candidates to have the foresight and responsibility to quickly review and increase the 2030 renewable energy target to more than 40% to help companies solve the problem of green electricity shortage and allow Taiwan to gain a foothold in the global net-zero economic competition. Greenpeace volunteers completed assembling the billboard before the opening of the campaign headquarters of presidential candidate Lai Ching-tak, attracting the attention of passers-by. And the neighbors of the abandoned mining area are not a shield. They just highlight that when Lai holds power, he “ignores the rights and interests of the elderly in his hometown.”
