Greenland with no to oil exploration – environmental organizations rejoice

– This is a great victory for the climate, and the decision can have a great explosive effect in both the Norwegian oil debate and this autumn’s climate negotiations, says leader Therese Hugstmyr Woie in the environmental organization Nature and Youth.

They believe that the Norwegian government has tried to close its eyes to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) report, which states that there is no room for more oil licenses in the world if the climate goals are to be achieved.

– The decision from Greenland shows even more clearly how backward Norway is, says Hugstmyr Woie.

Greenpeace Norway and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) are also pleased with the news from Greenland.

– We fully support that. I think it is a very good signal to send, says project coordinator for Greenland and the Arctic Kaare Winther Hansen in WWF to Teknisk Ukeblad.

Oil has never been found in Greenland, but it is believed to be large deposits.

– We have decided that the price is too high, says Greenland’s Minister of the Environment and Energy Kalistat Lund, and adds:

– We see the consequences of climate change every single day, and we want to contribute to global solutions, he says.
