Greenhouse Gas Emissions in European Union Countries Decline in First Quarter 2023

Brussels, August 16 / WAM / The total greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union countries during the first quarter of 2023

941 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, a decrease of 2.9% compared to the same quarter of 2022, which was then estimated at (969) million tons.

The decline coincided with a 1.2% increase in the European Union’s GDP in the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same quarter of 2022, according to data on quarterly estimates of greenhouse gas emissions by economic activity published today by Eurostat, the European statistical office in Brussels.

The data revealed that compared to the first quarter of 2022, emissions decreased in 5 out of 9 economic sectors..and the largest decrease was recorded in “electricity and gas” (-12.3%)..and the main sector in which emissions increased was the “transportation and storage” sector, by (+ 7.2%).

While emissions decreased in the first quarter of 2023 in almost all EU countries compared to the first quarter of 2022, the largest decreases in greenhouse gases were recorded in Bulgaria (-15.2%), Estonia (-14.7%) and Slovenia.

And among the 21 countries in the European Union that have decreased their emissions, only 6 countries have reduced their GDP (Czech, Estonia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary and Poland), while 15 countries have succeeded in the union (Portugal, Croatia, Belgium, Malta, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Romania, Italy, Cyprus, Greece, Slovenia and Bulgaria). ) from reducing emissions while increasing GDP.
