Groen does not intend to postpone the closure of the nuclear power plants any longer. Chairwoman Meyrem Almaci said this in a response to N-VA chairman Bart De Wever, who wants to stop this nuclear exit with a variable majority. Almaci also points to the shortage of renewable energy in Flanders, where N-VA is at the controls.

‘The federal coalition agreement opts for clarity, affordability and certainty. The closure of the nuclear power plants paves the way for the necessary acceleration of renewable energy. Each study indicates that this is the way to go. Delaying the problem isn’t serious. After 17 years of delay, it is now time to move forward. ‘ That says Groen chairwoman Meyrem Almaci on Saturday in a response to the statements by N-VA chairman Bart De Wever about federal energy plans.
Groen points to the ‘enormous responsibility’ of the Flemish government under the leadership of the N-VA. ‘Flanders is lagging behind enormously with regard to its energy and climate objectives. The share of energy from wind and sun really needs to increase. Moreover, Flanders has the exclusive competence to take measures for energy saving, essential for a good energy policy. The shortage that Flanders now has should be an impulse to do better together, not to lecture others. Time to sweep your own door, ‘Almaci concludes.
Coens: ‘Evaluation at the end of 2021’
CD&V chairman Joachim Coens stated this morning to VRT that he already understood De Wever’s concerns. ‘But the coalition agreement only provides for the reconfirmation of the nuclear exit, that was already a decided policy, and very important for us: provides for an evaluation moment in November 2021 regarding security of supply and the impact on the price.’
Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten (Groen) also made it clear on Twitter that she is determined to implement the coalition agreement, a ‘roadmap for a sustainable and prosperous Belgium’. ‘Lack of clarity and delay has brought us into this situation. Vision and expertise is what gets us on course. ‘
