A year ago, the Greens MP Daniela Evers was elected to the state parliament for the first time. The native of the Black Forest represents constituency 46/ Freiburg I and is the chairwoman of a working group on justice and migration within the parliamentary group. In an interview with Max Schuler, she says what is important when it comes to taking in Ukrainian refugees, what problems she sees in tourism and what needs to change after the traffic chaos in her constituency.
BZ: How do you see the country positioned in terms of housing refugees from Ukraine?
Evers: I see a great willingness to help on the part of the country, but also from the people in the country. The willingness is unbelievably high. Basically, we are in a good position. The places in the state initial reception centers were increased very quickly. An attempt was made to forge a broad alliance between municipalities and the state in order to get accommodation.
BZ: But the processes don’t seem to work everywhere yet.
Evers: Due to the different legal situation when Ukrainians enter the country, the situation is slightly different than in 2015. Everyone who entered the country and reported back then was brought to Karlsruhe and assigned from there. This is not more pleasant for the people, but it was easier to manage from an organizational point of view. All levels still have to adjust to the new situation.
