The general meeting of the Landsbond der Christian Mutualiteiten (LCM) gave the green light on Saturday for the reform of the nineteen regional health insurance funds into two entities.
–
Today there are eleven regional CM health insurance funds active in Flanders and eight in Wallonia. These will be placed in two health funds by 1 January 2022: one in Flanders and one in Wallonia, including the German-speaking Community. Both will also provide services in Brussels.
–
According to a press release from the CM, the aim is to ‘provide answers to a rapidly changing health (care) landscape in Belgium’. ‘Whereas health insurance funds used to focus on illness such as the lack of health, health funds work from a broader definition of health, which entails much more than not being ill. The two strong health funds are the stepping stone to contribute to a more healthy society in a digitized world,’ according to the CM.

The next step in the restructuring process is the mutualist elections. These will take place in the spring of 2022. The purpose of the election is ‘to further strengthen participation from below.’
