Green instead of yellow: Rapid changes the beer sponsor

One of the longest sponsorship partnerships in Austrian football has come to an end: after 26 years, Ottakringer will no longer be the Rapid beer, the Hütteldorfer switch to Gösser after a mutual separation – the contract runs for five years. “The beer traffic light is switched from yellow to green,” announce the green.

While Ottakringer has a strong presence in Vienna, Gösser is considered the best-selling beer in the country by the leading Brau Union.

Long friendship

The fact that Ottakringer has been associated with Rapid for decades is also due to the friendship between the long-time company boss Siegfried Menz and Honorary President Rudolf Edlinger. Menz sat in the executive committee under Edlinger and “helped” with a contract extension for Steffen Hofmann through an advertising campaign with the captain.

Finally, the once friendly business relationship cooled off. The slump in sales due to Corona at the leading beer brand in Vienna for events of all kinds may also have played a role. The anger after the scandal about the misogynistic banner in the West block before the game against Hartberg (0: 1) became official.
