Jakarta, Selular.ID – Tencent through TiMi Studio Group (TiMi) and Tencent Institute of Games, today announced the Green Game Jam for Youth, a global online competition inspired by Green Game Jam organized by Playing for the Planet Alliance. Playing for the Planet Alliance is an initiative facilitated by the United Nations (UN).
Peter May, JOOX country manager, Tencent Indonesia said, Green Game Jam for Youth challenges students to create games with environmental-focused elements or themes.
This competition is also supported by various giant video game producers, both mobile, console and PC, in order to educate and empower millions of players to take action to protect nature.
“As has happened in many other places, the impacts of climate change are already being felt in Indonesia. Interestingly, the younger generation recognizes this as part of social change in climate change. With so many talents in the popular video game industry. Through the Green Game Jam for Youth Initiative, we can inspire as many students as possible to raise awareness of environmental issues and remind everyone that there is no such thing as too young to care about our earth,” he said.
Peter May explained, video games have the power to raise awareness of billions of people around the world about nature conservation and restoration. Video games can also educate about the actions and solutions needed to strengthen the response to the threat of climate change.
To that end, Tencent is collaborating with several universities in Southeast Asia to invite students to participate in the Green Game Jam for Youth and promote various environmental solutions needed to make the world a better place. Participating universities include the University of Indonesia and the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in Indonesia; Bangkok University, Dhurakij Pundit University and Mahidol University in Thailand; Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation in Malaysia; National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, and DigiPen Institute of Technology in Singapore; and many more will join.
Sonny Rustiadi, Director of ITB Career Center, said that ITB sees its participation in the Green Game Jam for Youth as a great opportunity to raise awareness of climate change through the power of visuals and words.,
Ahmad Gamal, Director of Innovation and Science Techno Park at the University of Indonesia, acknowledged the need to not only create awareness among students about environmental issues, but also challenge their thinking to create strategies that can be applied when needed.
“The Green Game Jam for Youth is a tool for us to test the intelligence and abilities of our students in dealing with one of the world’s main problems, namely climate change. We see this competition as a platform to demonstrate our ability to produce graduates who are not only successful in their studies, but are also able to become environmentally conscious and responsible members of a global society,” said Ahmad.

The competition aims to engage students at more than 300 universities in China, North America and Southeast Asia. Participants in The Youth Challenge will be guided in developing video games and adopting effective strategies to promote environmental responsibility through webinars and online courses from the Tencent Institute of Games and other mentors in the video game industry.
The winners will receive awards and cash prizes, including US$10,000 for the gold medal winner, US$3,000 for the silver medal, US$1,000 for the bronze medal, and US$500 for the “Honorary” winner who is the fourth place winner. The results of the competition will be announced in November in conjunction with the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland, England.
