Green Comet Approaches Earth Once in a Lifetime February 2023, Here’s BRIN’s Explanation

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – A comet green will cross Earth’s sky for the first time in 50,000 years and will likely last for a while. When near Earth, it will be visible through binoculars as a small green glow.

Scientists say, green comet it will be closest to Earth on February 2, 2023. NASA even said, it is not impossible that he will be seen with the naked eye.

Collect BBC, NASA calls this comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF). It makes its closest approach to the sun on January 12, before making its closest approach to Earth on February 2.

News about comet ZTF This was also confirmed by Andi Pangerang from the Space Research Center, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), via the Space Science Education website.

ZTF stands for Zwicky Transient Facility, an astronomical observation facility with a wide field of view, which uses a camera connected to the Samuel Oschin telescope at the Palomar Observatory, California, United States.

According to Andi, this comet was first observed on July 10 2021. He explained that this comet only passed once in its lifetime because of its hyperbolic orbit.

“A hyperbolic orbit is an orbit that has an elongation or eccentricity value greater than one, so that it forms an open curve at the two foci,” said Andi, quoted on Friday (13/1/2023).

Compare this with a parabolic orbit where the ellipse is exactly one, or an elliptical orbit where the ellipse is between 0 and 1.

BRIN said, this comet is expected to pass near Earth on February 2 at 00.32 WIB / 01.32 WITA / 02.32 WITA at a distance of about 42 million kilometers from this planet.
