The Green Bay Packers no longer want to continue with Aaron Rodgers. The quarterback superstar has come to terms with it and wants to move on – preferably to the New York Jets. And they would love to secure the services of the 39-year-old.
So everything good? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that!
Because the negotiations about a trade from Rodgers from the Packers to the Jets have been going on for weeks without a concrete result, i.e. without a trade, which should actually only be a formality.
So what’s the problem? The conditions of the change, i.e. the equivalent value, the trade package.
Green Bay Packers are asking a lot
How Yahoo Sports reported, the Packers want a second-round pick for Rodgers from the Jets for the 2023 draft and a first-round pick for the 2024 draft. That’s a lot of stuff for a playmaker in the fall of his career. The Packers reportedly offered the Jets a pick in the 2025 draft as a form of insurance should Rodgers retire after the upcoming season.
But that’s obviously still too much for the Jets. Although the team is already strengthening with players who are compatible with Rodgers, such as wide receiver Allen Lazard, who he has played with in Green Bay for the past few years.
The Packers have the strings in their hands, they have no time pressure, because in Jordan Love the Rodgers successor is already ready. The clock is not really ticking for the Jets either, and Rodgers is likely to skip the voluntary training sessions in spring anyway. Nevertheless, there is always the theoretical danger that the deal will still burst. And then the Jets would have a problem. The squad also includes Zach Wilson, who retired last season, along with Tim Boyle and Chris Streveler.
Is everything over by the end of April?
So what’s next? Many pundits are estimating that the trade will go ahead during the draft later this month in Kansas City (April 27-29). The Jets have picks 42 and 43 in the second round, which means that the second day of talent selection could finally happen.
Then an era officially ends in Green Bay. Drafted by the Packers in 2005, Rodgers led the franchise to their fourth Super Bowl in 2010. Rodgers missed the playoffs with the Packers last season and then left it open how things would continue for him.
After the Super Bowl, Rodgers pondered his future alone and in complete darkness for several days, and then decided to pursue his career. His contract in Green Bay officially runs until the end of the 2026/27 season.
