Greeks can go to the polls again in a month to the satisfaction of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. After last weekend’s elections, parties are unable to form a new government.
Mitsotakis’ party Nea Dimokratia (New Democracy) won a strong election victory on Sunday, but just missed enough seats for an absolute majority. Mitsotakis is convinced that this will succeed in a second round of voting.
The prime minister could have tried to form a coalition, but Mitsotakis prefers to rule alone. Leader Alexis Tsipras of the left-wing opposition party Syriza, who came second, also refrained from working with Neo Dimokratia.
The Greek elections were different than usual due to a new election law. Previously, the winning party received a bonus of fifty seats, so that party hardly ever had to govern with a coalition. That bonus, set by Mitsotakis, is there in the second round. The winning party then gets between twenty and fifty seats, depending on the result.
The second round will take place on June 25. Until then, an acting prime minister will take office, who will temporarily rule the country.
