Greek trade unions have announced a 24-hour strike

Greek unions representing workers in the public sector, shipping and public transport have announced a 24-hour strike on Wednesday, demanding the government stop its privatization policy.

Protesters are also demanding that Greece’s political leadership take responsibility for last week’s train collision that killed 57 people and injured dozens.

Protesters demand that the causes of the accident be thoroughly investigated.

The head of the station, who was working at the time of the accident, has admitted that he made a mistake, but many Greeks believe that the main responsibility lies with the state.

The media reports that the electronic security and control systems worked only partially or did not work at all. All the governments that have been in power in Greece for the last 20 years are accused of criminal negligence towards the railways.

The train collision, which took place last Tuesday in northern Greece near Larissa between Athens and Thessaloniki, has provoked protests that turned violent in Athens and Thessaloniki.

In Greece, only the trains themselves, which have been managed by an Italian company for years, have been privatized, but the infrastructure and employees are still under the control of the Greek state-owned railway company.
