To mislead the guards, they had set off the alarm system several times in various other places in the museum, only to enter the building early in the morning through a balcony door. The security officers had temporarily turned off the alarm, and as a result, the thieves did not see the motion detector until too late. During the chase, one of the thieves dropped a fourth painting, a work by Mondrian from 1905 entitled Landscape. It is still one of the largest art thefts in recent Greek history. The museum has since improved its surveillance.
