The Greek police officer who was seriously injured in riots between hooligans from volleyball clubs Olympiacos and Panathinaikos in early December died on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old officer was hit by a flare during disturbances outside the stadium before the match. Doctors decided to amputate one of his legs to save his life, but that was ultimately to no avail.

The police arrested more than four hundred rioters, including the eighteen-year-old man who set off the flare. The match was stopped in the second set due to the situation outside the stadium.

The Greek sports world has been struggling with fan violence for years, especially in football. Due to various incidents, no spectators are allowed in the highest Greek football competition until February 12.

The Hellenic Football Association has announced several measures to improve security, such as special cameras in all stadiums and electronic access systems with identity checks for supporters.
