Greek police arrest teenage fan for assaulting Korean fan

Police arrested a teenage fan who assaulted a Korean fan who visited the home stadium of Olympiacos, a Greek professional football team belonging to Hwang Ui-jo (30) and Hwang In-beom (26).

The Greek media ‘Katimerini’ reported on the 17th (local time) that “a 19-year-old local man, one of the suspects in the attack on a Korean fan, was arrested by the police”.

The suspect is currently under investigation and investigations into the remaining personnel involved in the attack are ongoing.

The assault took place ahead of the 2022-23 UEFA Europa League match between Olympiacos and Freiburg (Germany) held at the Karaiskaki stadium in Greece on the 16th.

At the time, a Korean YouTuber who visited the stadium to cheer on Hwang Ui-jo, Hwang In-beom and Jung Woo-young (Freiburg) was attacked and ridiculed by some Olympiacos thugs and suffered damage such as having the their cell phone stolen. This news spread quickly through YouTube and the community, causing a lot of controversy.

The Korean fan reported a bruise on his forehead and a slight tear in the upper part of his eye.

When the incident became known, the Olympiacos club said: “A Korean fan who was attacked near the stadium is a registered member of our club. Olympiacos will provide a season ticket that will allow him to watch a home game. whenever he wishes “.

Hwang Ui-jo and Hwang In-beom, who play for Olympiacos, also expressed their opposition to the assault via SNS.

Hwang Ui-jo posted an apology to Olympiacos and Hwang In-beom also stressed: “There should never be violence for any reason.”
