Greek PM: World music has lost its international artist

Film music composer Vangelis has died at the age of 79, Greek Prime Minister Kirco Micotakis said on Thursday.

“Gangel Papatanasiu is no longer with us. World music has lost an international artist,” Micotakis said on Twitter.

Greek media reported that Vangelis died on May 17 in a hospital in France after being infected with a coronavirus.

Gangel gained fame in the late 1960s as a member of the progressive rock band Aphrodite’s Child. The world-famous Greek singer Demiss Russ also began his career as a musician in this group.

As a pioneer of electronic music, Vangelis is inspired by space exploration, nature, futuristic architecture, the New Testament and the May 1968 student unrest.

Vangelis has gained the most popularity by writing music for many famous films, including the 1981 British historical sports drama “Chariots of Fire”, for which he won an Oscar.

His music can also be seen in films such as “1492: Conquest of Paradise” and “Alexander the Great”, “Blade Runner”, “The Bounty”, Francesco and Bitter Moon.
