Greek Parliament Votes to Legalize same-sex Marriage, Making History in Orthodox Christian Country

Feb 15, 2024 at 11:09 PM Update: an hour ago

The Greek parliament voted in favor of a bill on Thursday evening that would make it possible for people of the same sex to marry. Greece is one of the first Orthodox Christian countries to take this step.

The proposal received support from 176 of the 300 Greek parliamentarians. Members of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ New Democracy party overwhelmingly voted against or abstained.

Thanks to cooperation on the left, a majority was in favor of the proposal. This also makes it possible for same-sex couples to adopt children.

Activists have fought for years for the right to marry and celebrated the vote results on the doorstep of parliament. A registered partnership has been possible in Greece since 2015.
