Greek Government Exploring Options for Sea Delivery of Humanitarian Aid to Gaza Strip

Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis announced on Monday that Athens is “discussing with its allies” the Americans and the United Nations the possibility of delivering humanitarian aid to civilians in the Gaza Strip by sea.

The spokesman said in response to a question during a press conference, “Greece is studying, with all its allies, including the United States and the United Nations, delivering humanitarian aid by sea to civilians” in Gaza.

He added: “It is a very difficult and complicated procedure, and we do not have any other details at the present time.”

Calls increased on Sunday to allow emergency humanitarian aid to pass into the Gaza Strip, which is witnessing “violent clashes” between Hamas and the Israeli army.

On Friday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced during the European Union summit in Brussels that Greece, a member of the European Union and NATO located in the southeastern Mediterranean, supports “opening humanitarian corridors” and a “humanitarian truce if necessary.”

The Gaza Strip is suffering from a harsh siege, and in recent days food and medical aid shipments have entered it through the Rafah crossing that separates it from Egypt, but they are not enough to provide relief to more than two million Palestinians.
