Construction workers have found a marble head of the god Hermes in the center of Athens. The Greek Ministry of Culture suspects that the find dates back to the third or fourth century BC.
The construction workers were bumped into work on the sewerage system in the old city center. It was about 1.30 meters below the sidewalk of a busy street.
According to the ministry, the head is still in good condition. It has been taken to a warehouse of the Athenian Antiquities Bureau.
In classical times, heads or busts of Hermes were often placed on intersections of roads as a border marker between streets. In Greek mythology, Hermes was not only the messenger of the gods, but also the patron of travelers.
