Greek Air Force Major Epaminondas Kostas died on the morning of Wednesday, December 27, while flying on a T-2 training aircraft in the city of Kalamata.

The T-2E Buckeye, flown by a 40-year-old Greek Air Force major, crashed more than a kilometer northwest of Kalamata airport. According to preliminary data, just before the fall the plane exploded in the air.

The plane crash was seen by Kostas’ wife and two children, who were visiting him at the airport.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased, promising to support them.
“This loss highlights how hard our pilots’ work is. But also how great their dedication to duty is. The country will always be grateful to the major,” he said.

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias declared three days of national mourning in connection with the death of Epaminondas Kostas, which “causes grief throughout Greek society.”
