Greed never ends well. When a decoration worker in the United States started work, he accidentally found 1.45 million Hong Kong dollars in cash suspected to be left by the homeowner from the bathroom cabinet. After telling the homeowner, he only received 10% of the share. The uneven distribution of the money went to court. Unexpectedly, as many as 21 legal heirs were discovered after the investigation. The owner and the workers ended up “losing” because of greed.

Renovation workers accidentally discovered a huge sum of money “distributed unevenly” and went to court
According to comprehensive foreign media reports, American female householder Amanda Reece commissioned worker Bob Kitts to renovate her home in 2006. During the renovation, Bob accidentally found a hidden compartment behind the bathroom mirror cabinet, which contained two locked wooden boxes. He opened it and took a look. A total of £150,000 in cash (approximately HK$1.45 million) was found.
Bob immediately notified Amanda, the owner of the house, that the other party promised to give Bob 10% of the cash, which is about HK$140,000, as a “remuneration”. The money issue eventually brought the homeowner and the renovator to court.
“Los-lose” for homeowners and renovation workers
The incident went to court. During the investigation, it was found that the cash was printed in the 1920s and should have belonged to the former owner, Dunne. There were as many as 21 legal heirs, so they also sent representatives to join the fight. However, long before discovering the real owner of the property, Amanda, the female homeowner, spent about HK$100,000 of it on a vacation to Hawaii with her mother, and some of it was sold to banknote merchants.
The remaining 200,000 Hong Kong dollars in the sum, Amanda finally decided to give up the fight, and the court ruled that the workers can get 13.7% of the total amount, and the rest of the money will be divided among 21 heirs. A lawyer representing the former homeowner described the case as a “greedy case,”
“If these two were willing to work it out in private, the matter would not have gone to court and the other 21 heirs would not have been found. They all lost in the end because of irrationality.”
The worker pointed out that the incident caused him to be portrayed as a greedy person. The negative image caused him to lose a lot of decoration business, but he emphasized that he did nothing wrong:
“It’s probably not going to happen again. I have to admit how surprising it is to have a large sum of cash all of a sudden.”
