Greece to Receive Fifth-Generation F-35 Fighter Jets From US, Prime Minister Announces

Greece will receive fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets from the US in accordance with previously reached agreements. this was reported by Greek government sources after talks between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, reports AMNA.

The meeting took place at Mitsotakis’ home in Chania on the island of Crete, where Blinken had arrived from Istanbul after meeting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

On the agenda of the talks were the events in the Middle East, the war in Ukraine and the strategic cooperation between Greece and the US, which includes the purchase of F-35 fighter jets.

“Greece, as a consistent and reliable partner and ally, will get what was agreed,” an AMNA source said.

In late June 2022, Greece sent an official letter to the US requesting the purchase of a squadron of fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets. The Greek Kattimerini announced earlier that the final decision would depend on Athens’ financial capabilities.

“It seems that Athens is already moving towards a smaller number of aircraft in the first phase of the purchase, i.e. 12 instead of 20,” the paper said. Prime Minister Mitsotakis expressed hope that Greece will receive its first F-35s in 2028.

Turkey has been excluded from the F-35 delivery program due to the purchase of Russian S-400 air defense systems,
