Greece requested a 30% “haircut” and a 20-year grace period – 2024-08-28 05:33:14

/ world today news/ The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recognizes that 30% of the Greek debt must be written off. This was announced by Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in a televised address to the nation.

He referred to the IMF’s Greek debt sustainability report, saying the document justified Athens’ position. “The IMF has never presented this opinion to creditors of the Greek government,” Tsipras said. “This vindicates the government’s position as it confirms that the debt is not sustainable and there is only one way to make it sustainable – a 30% haircut and a 20-year grace period exempt from payment.

Yesterday, the IMF published its report with an analysis of Greece’s financial obligations. It concludes that even with structural reforms, Greece will not be able to service its debt unless part of it is written off. The IMF announced that Athens needs 52 billion new loans in the next three years.

Tsipras called on the population to unite. “At the opening of the polling stations, we must all act responsibly and respect opposing opinions in order to meet our common future,” Tsipras said.

“On Monday, there will be nothing that can divide us”, added the prime minister and called on people to say “no” to “ultimatums, blackmail, fear and division. I call on you to make a decision for Greece to remain proudly in a united Europe”. he also said. /TASS
