The conservative Nea Dimokratia party of 55-year-old premier Kyriakos Mitsotakis won the elections with about 41 percent of the vote, doubling second-placed Syriza of former premier Alexis Tsipras, which held 20 percent.
This is an unequivocal sign of appreciation for Mitsotakis, but the party has announced that the prime minister will not accept an exploratory mandate to return to the vote on June 25 in order to find a majority capable of giving more concrete safety margins.
Pasok, the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, got about 11 percent of the votes, the Kke (Communist Party) just over 7 percent, the extreme right of the Greek Solution 4.5 percent.
Under the parties that have not passed the barrier, including the MeRa25 of former Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis which is at 2.5 percent.
Mitsotakisha expressed satisfaction with the “important result”, and stated hotly that “We will run faster, for better wages, jobs, a better health system and a stronger Greece”.
