Greece Implements New Climate Tax on Overnight Stays for Tourists

What will the fee be?

Overnight stays in Greece this summer will be taxed with the so-called “climate tax”. The fee will apply during the tourist season – from March to October, and will be double the current one. Accommodation in a one- or two-star hotel will be charged 1.5 euros per bed. Guests of three-star complexes will pay 3 euros per night, and four-star luxury will cost us 7 euros per night.

Greece and Turkey have increased tolls on their road network

The aim is to assist the country in dealing with the damage caused by natural disasters.

The fee will be paid on site at the hotels. Tour operators are not allowed to include it in the packages they will offer. Tourists will be given a form and hoteliers have to pay the amount every month to the state treasury. It is expected that about 300 million euros will be collected in this way.

Hoteliers who evade taxes will be penalized. The fine is currently 5,000 euros, and it is expected to be increased.
